Anyone try juicing?

Okay. So after reading and hearing about all of the health benefits of juicing, I decided to try it. I went and bought an expensive juicer (paid more than $100 for it) because it was supposed to pulverize everything to the point of becoming juice, with as little "waste" as possible.

Then I bought a bunch of veggies and fruits to try out in my shiny new machine and as soon as I got home, I plugged the thing in and started juicing dinner. I have to admit, I was impressed when the (noisy) juicer actually did get juice out of a small potato that I put in it, and the spinach was a very green color in the glass until I added tomatoes and brocolli. Then, the carrots added a weird kind of orange to the mix and I think that's when I went a little crazy with the whole idea and added cabbage and squash.

When I was done feeding the tube, I had what looked like something from a radioactive swamp. It smelled even worse. I thought, "It's supposed to be good for me, so I'm gonna drink the darned stuff." Bad mistake. It was one of the worst swills I've ever encountered (when will I learn to follow my instincts?). Quickly, I began to run for the salt, thinking that would make it all better. Sorry, no dice.

I quickly came to realize, as I tried to hold my nose, be brave, and swallow another swig of the stuff, that potatoes - no matter how small - should ALWAYS be cooked. So should squash. No amount of salt could "fix" what was wrong with this mix.

Then, thinking that dinner was a complete wash-out, I turned my attention to cleaning the machine. Having never juiced before, I was unprepared for the amount of "waste" that went into the pulp catcher! Crud - there was a whole salade in there! Thinking that this was a bonus, I immediately thought my dinner plans for a healthy meal had just been salvaged. To say that disappointment soon followed, would be a great understatement. It looked and smelled like fresh lawn clippings, but I was determined. So I added a little salad dressing, grabbed a fork, and went for it. Turns out, I'm not a cow! And in fact, many cows would also spit that stuff out!

Sawdust and glue came to my mind, as I tried to make myself swallow the veggie paste in my mouth. It just wasn't going down. I had actually lost the ability to swallow. The muscles in my throat were incapable of the function. This too, was being spit out, into the trash.

The good news to all of this is that because of the violent assault on my digestive system, I had completely lost my appetite. Nothing sounded good anymore. Dinner was (thankfully, blissfully) OVER. But, I plan to try again, as I think I just went overboard. I think I'll have much better (and more palatable) results, if I keep it simple. Tomato juice should consist of tomatoes and not contain too many other veggies (I'm thinking maybe a carrot but not more than that). Carrrot juice should consist of carrots and maybe an apple for sweetness, but not more than that. And NEVER, under any circumstances, should raw potatoes OR squash go into the juicer!

Anybody else try this "miracle to healthy dieting"?

There is this one drink I'd make in the morning. It was two cups of milk, a full measure of Shaklee instant protien, two eggs, a bannana, 1/2 teasp. vanilla, a large blob of Karo syrup (or honey OR molasses if yer feelin spunky - just forego the vanilla), and a tap of nutmeg.
I'd just hit the chop button a few times because I didn't like waiting for the foam to die down and I hated the burps it gave me if I drank the foam. See, the chop button doesn't stay engaged, you have to hold it. I'd look down into the mix and watch for the nutmeg to dissapear and that would be about good. Except for one morning when I was running on about 3 hours of sleep, hit the wrong button that STAYED down. Pitting logic against anger I told myself that all those ingredients HAD to be good for ones skin...

'cause I started my day out with a facial. :p

Hi, Smiles and Pamela!

I'm so glad you had as much fun reading my post as I had writing it. It was just such a brutal experience to my senses I had to share my hard-learned lesson. At one point the juicer was beginning to look like a very large, very expensive paper weight and I actually wondered if I might be able to use some of its parts to fix a bicycle, or lawnmower, or something more useful.

But admittedly, honeydew melon with just a "dab" of cucumber is actually pretty good. And yeah, I've decided not to use it for veggie juices, as too much of the "good stuff" is rendered inedible and I get more out of the veggies if I simply steam them or eat them raw (which I like to do, anyway).

At least I can finally have fruit juices made with the juicer. I wasn't able to drink them because of the way that they're processed by companies for mass production and selling in stores. But I can have them made in the juicer and they don't raise my blood sugar very much at all. So it's nice to be able to enjoy fruit again.

Pamela has the right idea. If you want or need chopped veggies for cooking or whatever, the blender or even a simple food chopper is the way to go. All the good stuff goes into the pot that way, rather than in the trash.

I just didn't expect there to be SO much waste! And it looked to me that most of the "pulp" in the catcher was the roughage from the veggies - the skins, mostly. That's too bad, cuz that's one of the great benefits of eating veggies!

Oh well. At least I tried, and I actually can use the thing sometimes - it'll make some great soup bases and fruit drinks. And since I put out the extra money for it, it should last a REALLY long time. So now it's looking a little less like an object for target practice, and more like an appliance that's good to have when you need one.

I have to agree - drinking salad is just wrong. Sad, and wrong. Poor guy. I hope he's better now.

God bless, Smiles, Pam and gang.

Pamela and I laughed and laughed reading your post! Yes we juice too, but we stay more on the fruit side. If I want to drink my veggies I just get generic V8 and spike it with a little tobasco.
I wanted this $300.00 juicer that was supposed to be like top of the line.

When Gregory and Jamie got married and ended up with 3 blenders among their gifts, Gregory bequeathed one unto us. Once I got used to it I liked the blender so well I just settled for it. Pam said its good that I get the roughage that I'd loose in the pulp of a regular juicer. Go figger.

I've made some concoctions that were um, interesting to say the least, but I've always been able to choke them down. I remember when I was in the Navy, one of my best friends was almost killed in a terrible accident. His motorcycle was creamed by teen girl head on. He had a helmet on but it wasn't a full face. His bottom jaw was destroyed.

Portsmouth Naval Hospital put him back together and wired his jaw shut. We went out and got him a blender. He had this jumbo Quick Trip straw that fit where one of his teeth was broken. Man, there was NO END to what we'd put in that blender! I'm talking steak and eggs, biscuits and gravy, salad and dressing (drinking salad is just wrong by the way) and of course he'd MAKE us guys try the best and worst stuff he'd come up with. He'd throw in 3 pieces of pizza, some tomato juice and BRRORRRORRR. Baked potato sour cream with chives butter and milk and a shot of steak sauce. Nothing was sacred. He said ANYTHING beat vanilla or chocolate Ensure.
Ever seen pureed hotdog? Its puce and pasty. Some things you want to leave a little texture to.

But as far as venturing to eat the pulp from a juicer? Aye, your a brave woman. LOL
Thanks for sharing, I loved it!
